Snake Gourd Dal

Snake Gourd might appear as a cross between a Bottle Gourd and Ridge Gourd, IMHO.

This humble vegetable needs to be peeled, seeds removed and the remaining flesh chopped. You can then flavour it with the spices you like. I made a dal out of it. It was hassle free and easy.

  • 2 Snake Gourds . Medium Size ... [ Peeled , cored and diced
  • 1 Tomato . Medium Size ... [ Chopped
  • 1 onion ... Small . [ finely chopped
  • 1 chilly .. . Green [ Chopped
  • 4 Cups Tuvar Dal water [split pigeon peas]- Soaked in warm 3 /..
  • Salt .
  • 1 Tsp Turmeric powder ... .
  • 1 Tsp Chilly chilly Red powder [ Adjust if the green is too hot ....
  • 1 Tbsp Ghee ....
  • 1 Tsp Jeera ... .
  • pinch asafoetida of . A or hing
  • Optional Lemon juice . [

Instructions
  1. Boil the soaked dal and snake gourd with some salt and turmeric in a pressure cooker. [2 whistles on full flame and 2 on slow flame.
  2. In a pan, heat the ghee and add the jeera and green chilly.
  3. Add the onion and cook till it is translucent.
  4. Add the tomatoes and some salt.
  5. Pour the boiled dal in the pan and stir until it is amalgamated.
  6. Cover the pan and cook it for 3-4 min or until the froth of the dal disappears.
  7. Serve with Chapati, paratha, bhakri or steam rice.
